Individuals with developmental disabilities are at heightened risk for developing mental disorders as well as experiencing abuse, trauma and bullying. Anxiety disorders as well as mood disorders are frequently diagnosed yet may appear somewhat different in this population. The high frequency of mental health problems in this population paired with a high probability for trauma have important implications for caregivers, respite workers, and strategies for caregiving and treatment.
In this series with Sheila Mansell, emphasis will be placed on understanding these two disorders and strategies that are useful in care provision and intervention.

Mood disorders are recognized as being a common problem for individuals with intellectual disability. A review of the diagnostic criteria associated with some of the more common mood disorders will be presented and special emphasis will be placed on understanding age effects and how mood disorders present. Review of the DM-ID (NADD) criteria for mood disorder will help clarify these ideas and best practice for mood disorders will be presented.
