Description

Many children, youth, and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are reported to wander or “bolt”, leave the safety of a responsible caregiver or support person, run away from school, home, or community setting. Wandering and bolting causes significant risk for individuals with ASD who may not be aware of the possible dangers and potential harms because they often lack safety awareness. Recent research conducted with families of loved ones with ASD has revealed several risk factors and behavioural characteristics related with wandering and bolting. Wandering and bolting causes considerable stress for family members and support providers and knowing the effective strategies for addressing this behaviour is critical for anyone providing support for individuals with ASD.

Outcomes/Objectifs d'apprentissage

In this webinar, Dr. Paula Hutchinson will focus on:

• Highlighting the risk factors associated with wandering and bolting
• Increasing the understanding of the possible causes of wandering and bolting
• Planning preventions to reduce risk and ways to respond when wandering and bolting occurs.

Support providers, caregivers, and family members of individuals with ASD will better understand how to anticipate and reduce risks, as well as, respond to wandering and bolting.
