Understanding Trauma: Essential Training for Direct Support Professionals

People with developmental disabilities experience mental health issues as a result of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect in greater numbers than the general public, yet there is little assessment, treatment or support. There is often a failure to recognize the nature of trauma in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Histories of abuse may be overlooked and instead behavioural presentations of trauma may be attributed to non-compliance, behavioural disorders, or psychiatric disorders, and as such are treated inappropriately.
Many direct support providers have not received the required training to support this population in healing from trauma. This training workshop, which has been developed in accordance with the values of inclusion, person-centered practice, self-determination, and celebration of diversity, will be of interest to those working with or caring for individuals with a developmental disability or dual diagnosis.
The material is suitable for service providers in a variety of settings including community-based mental health, residential or day treatment programs, healthcare and hospitals.
• Define trauma and identify various classifications of trauma such as PTSD, developmental trauma and traumatic stress response.
• Review key findings of neuroscience research to understand how trauma impacts the brain
• Describe what symptoms of trauma look like in people with Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD)
• Identify factors which make people with IDD vulnerable to trauma
• Demonstrate the ability to reframe behaviour using a trauma lens
• Develop awareness of strategies that to promote recovery and healing from trauma
