People with developmental disabilities experience mental health issues as a result of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect in greater numbers than the general public, yet there is little assessment, treatment or support. There is often a failure to recognize the nature of trauma in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Past abuse may be overlooked and behavioural presentations of trauma may be attributed to non-compliance, behavioural disorders, or psychiatric disorders, and as such are treated inappropriately.

Many direct support providers have not received the required training to support this population in healing from trauma. This 2-day workshop, which has been developed in accordance with the values of inclusion, person-centered practice, self-determination, and celebration of diversity, will be of interest to those working with or caring for individuals with a developmental disability or dual diagnosis.

This workshop will benefit anyone working with or caring for children, youth or adults with a developmental disability or dual diagnosis including developmental service workers, residential care staff, personal support workers, case managers, community protection workers, family resource workers.

This course is recommended for service providers in a variety of settings including community-based mental health, residential or day treatment programs, healthcare and hospitals.
