Studies have shown that Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) have a positive effect on physical, emotional and social development (Friesen, 2009). AAI is used in therapeutic settings for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder or pervasive developmental disorder and for emotional or behavioural disorders. Interactions with animals promote outward focus, inner calm, multi-sensory learning and social bonding. Animals offer non-judgement and acceptance — essential for people with unique needs. Practitioners and therapists may be curious about the clinical applications of using animals in therapy, but need some assistance getting started.

This workshop explores a range of intervention activities – some involving animals as well as animal representations (puppetry, books, stories, toys, stuffed animals, art). The instructor, a certified AAI practitioner and social worker, will share practical tools and strategies for animal therapy whether you want to start a new program or blend the techniques with existing interventions.

Outcomes/Objectifs d'apprentissage

• Explore different types of animal assisted interventions, activities, education and psychotherapy.
• Define scope of practice for each animal assisted intervention (therapeutic goals, strategies and outcomes measures)
• Review animal assisted interventions, standards of practice including animal and human welfare guidelines
• Develop awareness of handling and practice techniques
• Use screening and assessment tools to ensure a good match between animals and individual clients
