Addressing Self-Injurious Behaviour

Self-harm is often an immediate solution to bigger and more complex issues, but it can also have serious or even tragic outcomes. For those who work with children or youth who engage in self-harm, not knowing how to respond appropriately can cause tremendous stress.

Description

Self-harm can be a way of coping with problems, a way to express feelings that can’t otherwise be articulated or used to mask or release emotional pain. Participants will learn how to identify those at-risk, respond to self-injurious behaviour using empathetic listening and support others to develop their problem-solving and coping skills. 

This training will give you the tools and knowledge to provide effective interventions for those who self-harm. You will examine myths and misconceptions about self-harming behaviour and also look at how your personal attitudes may impact or interfere with our ability to intervene. 

Learning Outcomes 

  1. Challenge assumptions and attitudes about self-harming behaviour in order to provide more effective support and interventions. 
  2. Strengthen personal comfort level in dealing with issues of self-harm to encourage open dialogue and increase competency to support children and youth who are, or may be at-risk of, self-harming. 
  3. Identify factors to consider when making a referral for clinical intervention. 

Who Should Attend  

This course is recommended for anyone that works with children or youth who at-risk or may self-harm. This may be of interest to individuals wishing to understand and respond effectively to young people with trauma histories. These may include direct care of group home staff, foster parents, caregivers, child and youth practitioners, youth justice staff, educators, and more. 

Course Dates & Format  

There are no scheduled dates for this course at this time, however in-service is available.

This is a 6-hour training. This course consists of two 3-hour interactive virtual sessions using Zoom. 

Instructor:  Colleen Kamps, MA, CYC (Registered Psychotherapist)

Colleen is a licensed psychotherapist with over 40 years of clinical experience across a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient mental health, crisis intervention, specialized trauma programs, education, child welfare, counselling and training for first responders and frontline workers, and private practice. She also provides clinical consultation, training, and supervision to professionals and agencies in the helping field. Additionally, Colleen teaches at Centennial College, Toronto Metropolitan University, and Simon Fraser University. She is also the Education, Training, and Curriculum Development Manager with the Tema Foundation.

Her passion, commitment, and dedication to helping others are what keep her striving forward to make life easier for those who need support.

Licensing boards and professional organizations will grant Continuing Education credits for attendance at their discretion when participants submit the course outline and certificate.
