Anger: Assessing Catalysts for Optimal Outcomes

We often view anger behaviours because of an individual having limited problem-solving skills or as an artifact of learned behaviour. Although this can be the case, frequently anger is a symptom of a trauma, which is often overlooked during the assessment and treatment process.  Inadvertently this negatively impacts the young person’s self concept and increases tension between parent/teacher and the child. Understanding the catalysts of the anger, facilitates empathy and support from caregivers, thus maximizing treatment and intervention effects.

Description

It is well known that anger outbursts and other behaviours that are associated with anger are often the result of trauma. However, because society has little patience for such anger related behaviours there is a pressing need, placed on caregivers to redirect and manage the anger to reduce its threat to others and the community.  Frequently this intense focus on stopping the anger immediately results in a narrow and limited understanding of the anger’s catalyst (Tull, M., 2020).  Participants will learn the utility of assessments that can identify anger as a stand-alone issue or as symptom of trauma. The treatment and support for both types of anger will be explored using videos and case studies while applying the modalities of CBT and ACT. Participants will help construct a case study where anger is the by-product of a trauma and where anger is a stand-alone issue. Participants will be able to explain how the assessment measures and process helps to identify the underlying trauma, while taking a trauma informed approach to provide anger management support. 

Learning Outcomes 

  1. Identify and assess anger as a stand-alone issue and/or as a symptom of trauma.  
  2. Explore creative anger management and techniques that parents and teachers can support. 
  3. Develop a plan for trauma with a specific component focused on anger treatment. 
  4. Participants will learn how the focus on anger can have a positive impact on the overall trauma. 

Who Should Attend  

This online training is suitable for Social Workers, Psychotherapists, Early Childhood Educators, Teachers, and Developmental Service Workers looking for professional development opportunities. 

Course Dates & Format  

There are no scheduled dates for this course at this time, however in-service is available.

This is a 6-hour training. This course consists of two 3-hour interactive virtual sessions using Zoom. 

Instructor:  Bill Helmeczi, RPO, RSW 

Bill Helmeczi RPO, RSW is the CEO of a Community Addictions and Mental Health Agency. Formerly he was the Director of Mental Health for an Infant, Child, and Youth Mental Health Agency.  He was also Systems’ planner for Children’s Mental Health in the Region.  He has been the Director of Research and Training Institute which has supported over a dozen research projects. The formalized Intern program has trained over 100 graduate (Masters and Doctoral level students).  He developed a training manual for the treatment of Adolescents who sexually Offend (2002) and has spoken internationally on the subject. His doctoral dissertation was focused on health behaviour in an at-risk population. In addition, since 2000 have been teaching at Brock University in the Departments of Psychology and Child and Youth Studies.
