Ambiguous loss often leads to complicated grief that is overlooked or invalidated by society. Three primary types of ambiguous loss include: physical absence with psychological presence (e.g., a missing loved one, child in care), psychological absence with physical presence (e.g., a family member with severe mental illness) and relationships in transition (e.g., awaiting court decisions, pending adoption). This training provides professionals and caregivers with a trauma-informed framework to understand and respond to ambiguous loss—losses that lack clarity, closure, or public recognition.
