Description

Through a combination of practical guidance, interactive exercises, and skill-building activities, participants will develop the confidence and competence needed to provide meaningful support and guidance to their peers, ultimately enhancing the overall impact and outcomes of peer support initiatives within their communities. The training, “Peer Mentor Training: The Impact of Lived Experience” will incorporate experiences of working with racialized individuals and marginalized communities.

This course aims to equip peer mentors with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles by focusing on three key areas: strategic planning, emotional intelligence, and mentoring skills. The training culminates in opportunities for peer mentors to actively engage in mentoring, allowing them to apply what they have learned. Additionally, the course emphasizes the importance of self-care to ensure peer mentors can effectively support their mentees while maintaining their own well-being.

By focusing on these areas, the course provides a comprehensive framework for peer mentors to develop and enhance their skills, ultimately enabling them to make a positive impact on their mentees’ professional, social, and personal development.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the process of strategic planning through goal setting, time management and effective learning habits and techniques.
  2. Develop emotional intelligence by understanding self-awareness, self-regulation, sources of motivation, empathy and social skills.
  3. Apply mentoring skills though the practice of active listening, engaging conversations, and constructive feedback.

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for professionals working in group homes, youth services, justice, mental health, live-in treatment programs, multi-service agencies, and young parent organizations. It is also beneficial for those supporting newcomers or seeking to enhance peer support skills, as well as organizations aiming to strengthen their peer support initiatives.
