Mental Health First Aid, First Nations - Certification Course

Mental Health First Aid - First Nations, a 20 hour certification course, will help you to know how to handle a mental health crisis with cultural sensitivity. This new program was created by the Mental Health Commission of Canada in collaboration with Health Canada in consultation with federal/provincial/territorial networks and Indigenous experts in mental health and addictions.
It is a spark that awakens the courage to have open and honest conversations about mental health and is part of a larger journey that helps strengthen the connections within communities. You will gain a solid understanding of the 5 basic actions of EAGLE which is the framework for having a confident conversation about mental health with family, friends, clients, colleagues, and strangers.
The course includes 8 sections:
MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEYS: This speaks to First Nations culture and wellness, walking in two worlds, historical loss and trauma and circle of support.
THE FOUNDATION OF MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID: This addresses health and mental health, mental health problems and disorders, wellness circle for First Nations and Aboriginal Peoples, mental health stigma and The 5 actions of EAGLE.
PATHWAYS TO RECOVERY: You will dive deeper into 5 sections on: Mood-related Disorders, Substance-related Disorders, Self-Harm, Anxiety and Trauma-related Disorders and Psychotic Disorders. The Pathways to Recovery addresses the specific disorder, signs and symptoms, risk factors, specific and holistic approaches, crisis first aid in the context of First Nations culture and wellness, walking in two worlds, the 5 actions of EAGLE and circle of support.
JOURNEY TO WELLNESS: Learn ways to restore balance on the journey to wellness.
• Increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of the most common mental health problems
• Increase awareness of the Pathways to Recovery
• Increase confidence and skills to help those developing a mental health problem or in crisis
• Understand Crisis First Aid Skills related to: substance overdose, acute stress reaction, panic attack, suicidal behavior, self-harm and psychotic episode
Materials: Participants will be provided with the Training Manual for no additional cost.
NOTE: Safeguards is happy to be partnering with 4Rs Youth Movement to produce this training. Youth under 30 who are affiliated with 4Rs should select the Members rate. (All rates include HST)
