Self Compassion in the Workplace: Caring for Ourselves while Caring for Others

“Self Compassion in the Workplace: Caring for Ourselves while Caring for Others” is designed specifically to address the emotional challenges faced by so many of those working in Human Services. This is an opportunity to learn more about the impact and trajectory of burnout and compassion fatigue and increase your knowledge, skills and practices to foster a deeper connection to your own well-being. Learn how to enhance your ability to provide compassionate care and support without sacrificing your mental and emotional health. Most importantly, learn to identify self-care methods unique to you, and how best to deploy these mechanisms of care as needed.

Description

Often, we have activities we rely on to care for ourselves, yet we get stuck in routines, patterns and expectations where we cannot regularly invest in our own health and wellness. Using mindfulness and self compassion strategies, we will examine self care and wellness and work together to inform what will be supportive for you.

The training will emphasize the importance of setting boundaries and practicing self-care as essential tools for sustaining long-term resilience in caregiving and supportive roles. Through this workshop, participants will gain valuable skills to improve their overall well-being and support their ability to care for others with greater presence and empathy.

Participants will learn practical techniques to cultivate self compassion in the workplace, which can help reduce the risk of burnout and compassion fatigue. 

This instructor-led training includes opportunities for group discussion and self reflection.

Please note: There is a complementary training for those in management and leadership positions called: ‘Compassionate Leadership: Fostering Self-Care and Well-Being in Staff Teams and Organizations. You may want to take this session before the compassionate leadership training. 

Learning Outcomes

    1. Increase knowledge of the fundaments of burnout and compassion fatigue.
    2. Explore the trajectory of burnout and build knowledge on our reactions and needs building personal and professional connections to our experiences. 
    3. Increase knowledge on skills and practices to increase resiliencies to burnout through a mindful and self compassionate lens. 

Who Should Attend 

“Self Compassion in the Workplace: Caring for Ourselves while Caring for Others” is suitable for people providing direct support and services as well as managers and supervisors who want to better support their staff through training, skill development and supervision support. 

Course Dates & Format 

October 23, 2025

1:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET

This is a 3-hour training. This course consists of a 3-hour interactive virtual session using Zoom.

Instructor:  Joanne Barnes Smith MSW, RSW

A Registered Social Worker, Joanne Barnes Smith has over 18 years experience in the social work sector. Her career has predominately been focused on child/youth/family and community- developing, leading, and supporting initiatives in the private and public sector.  A mental health specialist utilizing a compassion focused and multi systemic approach, Joanne is invested in tough conversations on the impacts of social work and how we may better inform our approach to personal and professional wellness. Joanne is the lead consultant in her own private practice which predominately focuses on organizational consultation and individual psychotherapy.

Training Fee 

Member Fee: $110.00 + $14.30 (HST) = $124.30

Non-Member Fee:  $130.00 + $16.90 (HST) = $146.90

Continuing Education Information 

Licensing boards and professional organizations will grant Continuing Education credits for attendance at their discretion when participants submit the course outline and certificate.
