Description
The Therapeutic Crisis Intervention® (TCI) system helps organizations create a trauma sensitive environment where children and staff are safe and feel safe and all staff, including leadership, clinical, supervisors, and direct caregivers, understand the effects of trauma and adversity. The goal of the TCI system is to prevent and de-escalate potential crises, build capacity of staff to manage aggressive and violent behaviours, avoid potential injuries, and to create a learning culture where everyone, children and adults, learn from experiences.

TCI Direct Training Program Outline
The three-day Therapeutic Crisis Intervention® (TCI) direct training program is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of crisis prevention, intervention, and post-crisis support within a therapeutic framework.
Day One: The course begins with an introduction to the training and an overview of the implementation of the TCI system, setting the foundation for a trauma-informed and relationship-based approach. Participants explore key concepts such as the therapeutic milieu and strategies for crisis prevention, followed by the intentional use of self and developing an understanding of the child’s needs and behaviours. After lunch, the focus shifts to the Stress Model of Crisis, where participants learn to recognize escalation patterns, assess situations effectively, and respond appropriately to prevent further escalation.
Day Two: builds on these foundations by reinforcing learning through a refocus session, followed by in-depth exploration of crisis communication and active listening skills. Participants are introduced to practical behavior support techniques and strategies for providing emotional first aid. In the afternoon, the training covers the Life Space Interview as a tool for post-crisis intervention, along with managing power struggles, interpreting nonverbal communication during crises, and identifying elements of potentially violent situations to enhance safety and awareness.
Day Three: participants begin with another refocus session before advancing to more complex intervention strategies, including crisis co-regulation and post-crisis multi-level responses. The training emphasizes reducing the risk of harm and carefully considering safety interventions. In the afternoon, participants engage in interactive role plays to apply crisis intervention techniques in realistic scenarios, followed by guidance on proper documentation practices and conducting Life Space Interviews after an outburst. The program concludes with participant assessments, including a Life Space Interview evaluation and a written test, before formally closing the session at the end of the day.
