Description

This 6 day certificate program will provide staff with a current and comprehensive understanding of trauma as well as models of assessment and treatment.

A. Understanding Trauma: Current Research, Attachment Theory, Brain Development
Participants will learn about attachment theory and basic brain development with a focus on early traumatic experiences and the resulting impact on attachment and personality development. The training will also examine the implications for assessment and treatment.

B. Trauma Assessment (I): General
Trauma research will be reviewed as it applies to a variety of trauma experiences, including those who have experienced physical abuse and children who have witnessed violence. A framework for assessment will be outlined, which takes into account methods of collecting assessment data. Participants will learn about T.A.G. (Trauma Assessment General), a practical data collection method and engage in exercises to familiarize them with the model and learn to utilize information gained in the assessment to determine treatment needs.

C. Trauma Assessment (II): Sexual Victimization
Effective treatment planning is dependent on an assessment of the impact of the event, and takes into account how the event is experienced and the developmental context in which the experiences occur. Formal trauma assessment using a structured format and specific tools enables the clinician to understand the unique effects of a traumatic experience on an individual client. Trauma theory (Hindman, Vanderkolk, Janoff-Bullman) assists the clinician in identifying and responding to these key emotional belief systems.

D. Trauma Treatment (I): A Directive Structured Approach to Resolving Unresolved Trauma
Directive structured methods with children tend to reduce anxiety and enable the child to focus on identified treatment issues. Engagement in specific treatment strategies is enhanced by the therapist's familiarity and comfort with structured play. This training will specifically address the following treatment issues: cognitive distortions, sensorial reminders of trauma, sexual development disruption and persistent symptom presentation. Each issue will be presented with treatment plans and activities with specific case examples.

E. Trauma Treatment (II): Group Methods
Trauma research has demonstrated that secrecy and isolation are two of the most traumatizing variables for victims of abuse. Group therapy is the most effective method of addressing these potentially destructive variables as well as providing an opportunity to gain social support and learn creative problem solving skills. This training will focus on group therapy models for working with children and adolescents who have been traumatized by sexual abuse, physical abuse or through witnessing violence in their home.
